"Cheating...": Concussion Substitution Sees Rana's Entry, Internet Reacts

Talented pacer Harshit Rana, who has played two Tests, quite surprisingly made a surprise entry into the India playing XI in the fourth T20I against England in Pune on Friday. Though initially not named in the XI, Rana was called upon to replace allrounder Shivam Dube as a 'like-for-like' concussion substitute after the latter was struck on the helmet in the final over of India's innings. Dube, who scored 53, was hit on the helmet in the penultimate ball of the Indian innings by a Jamie Overton delivery.

Following the mandatory concussion test, Dube was cleared to play. However, he was run out on the final delivery of the innings. Dube is a pace allrounder, while Rana has so far played the role of  specialist fast bowler in the Indian cricket team.

Rana, who had recently played in the opening Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, came in to bowl in the 12th over and made an immediate impact, dismissing Liam Livingstone for 9. Rana finished with three wickets.

England skipper Jos Buttler appeared unhappy with the decision and was seen having a discussion with the umpires on the field. According to ICC's rules, teams are only allowed to name like-for-like replacements if a batsman is ruled out due to a concussion.

The decision to use Rana as a replacement of Dube did not go down well with many social media users, with some calling it cheating.

India had posted 181/9 after being sent in to bat. The hosts won the match by 15 runs to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. The final T20I will be played in Mumbai on Sunday.

Heidi Klum's 19-Year-Old Son Follows In His Supermodel Mom's Footsteps

A new model has emerged in the iconic Klum family. German-American model and television personality Heidi Klum's eldest son Henry Samuel made his debut on the runway for the first time last night. The 19-year-old turned muse for the label Lena Erziak at the Paris Couture Week. He not only donned ensembles from Lena Erziak Haute Couture spring 2025 show but took after his supermodel mother in the sensational moment.

Samuel hit the red carpet at the Paris Hotel le Marois in not one, but two black suits; each equally designed with proper precision. The first one featured an open back; something not thought of before. It also included standardised broad and slanted collars with full sleeves. Additionally, a long piece of knotted fabric fastened around the waist added edginess to his outfit. The young Klum lad teamed his uniquely designed upper with sleek pants that looked stylish.

Henry Samuel's stylist opted for a top-knotted ponytail hairstyle that added an oomph factor to his overall look. Minimal accessories, including only a pair of polished shoes, were enough to round off his charm.

Coming to his second look, the 19-year-old wore another black suit that screamed luxury. The stylish ensemble was layered with no shirt or t-shirt. Instead, a gigantic scarf made of a silk fabric of the same hues was tightened on his neck. The lengths flowed downwards, adding volume to Samuel's overall glam. He kept his accessories, makeup and hairstyle completely the same as the first and let his ensemble do the talking.

What worked like magic for his overall glam game was that the iconic designer asked him to straighten his gaze and walk like he was balancing a book on his head.

"Why Was My Photo Made Viral?": Man Detained, Released In Saif Attack Case

The 31-year-old man who was detained in Chhattisgarh as a suspect in the Saif Ali Khan case earlier this month said the police action has cost him his job and a marriage proposal, brought immense disrepute to his family, and left him with an "unbearable dangerous feeling".

In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Akash Kanojia, who was briefly detained and interrogated, said his photograph was widely circulated despite having no involvement in the crime. "Why was my photo made viral? I want justice," he said, threatening to move court if his photograph was not brought down by all those who shared it across various online platforms.

He also sought to know if police would have acted in a similar way had a VIP or a millionaire's son been a suspect in the case.

On January 18, Mr Kanojia was detained from Mumbai Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Kolkata Shalimar Jnaneswari Express at Chhattisgarh's Durg station by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) after a tip off from Mumbai police, two days after Mr Khan was stabbed by an intruder at his residence in Bandra.

He was released a day later, with Mumbai Police officials saying he was just a suspect. Days later and after over 70 hours of an intense manhunt, a 30-year-old man, who was later identified as a Bangladeshi national, was arrested in connection with the attack.

Mr Kanojia, however, said the police action had severe repercussions and left him and his family traumatised.

He said he lost his job as a driver. He said his marriage was fixed but the prospective bride's family called it off after he was detained in the case. He added that his relatives and friends are hesitant to meet or maintain ties with him and his family.

"Whatever happened to me should not happen to anyone else. I am a poor man, and that's why I had to see such days. What if there was a VIP or a millionaire's son in my place, what would they (police) have done? Such things happened to me today but they should not happen to anyone tomorrow. After such treatment, that dangerous feeling you get is unbearable," he said.

"I was defamed so much. It is a question of someone's life. I was not wrong. I had not committed any crime. Then why was my photo made viral? I am not capable of committing such crimes," he added.

He requested all those who circulated his photograph across platforms to delete it. "Otherwise there is only one last stop - court. I'll have to knock on the court's door," he said.

Mr Kanojia recalled the events that led to his detention. He said he was travelling on the Mumbai Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Kolkata Shalimar Jnaneshwari Express when he was cornered by the RPF men. "They showed me my photograph. I told him I am Akash Kanojia. They asked me to get off the train. When I asked them why, they said the Mumbai Police have asked them to locate me. Since I knew that the RPF was doing its duty, I agreed to go with them," he said.

"After this, the RPF took me with them. They told me that they would not ask me anything or initiate any action against me. They asked if I was just running away? I asked them why would I run? I told them that if they think I have done something wrong, then they should call the Mumbai cops. As the cops came, I was interrogated. I told them I did not commit the crime," he said.

Mr Kanojia said he asked the cops to take him to the actor to verify if he had carried out the attack. "I said that if he (Mr Khan) says that it was me who attacked him, then the police can blame me for all the crimes that took place in Mumbai that day. Why should I accept something that I have not done. After this, I was allowed to go home," he said.

Mr Kanojia's father, Kailash, earlier criticised the cops for "ruining my son's life".

"The police detained my son without verifying his identity. This mistake has ruined his life. Now, due to the mental trauma, Akash is unable to focus on work or communicate with his family. He has become withdrawn, doesn't talk properly, and has lost all motivation," he told PTI.

"People are saying there is no resemblance between my son and the actual accused. He lost his job and his marriage was called off. Who is responsible? The behaviour of the police has destroyed Akash's future," he added.

Speaking to reporters earlier, Mumbai police sub inspector Pradeep Fude said: "We can detain anyone for inquiry. We had been insisting he was just a suspect. There has been no mistake on our part. We had told the media that we would share authentic details but some went ahead and declared him an accused."

On January 16, Mr Khan suffered grievous injuries, after he was stabbed six times reportedly by Islam, during a failed burglary attempt at the actor's 12th floor residence in "Satguru Sharan" building in upscale Bandra.

Multiple teams of the police and the crime branch worked on several inputs and analysed footage from several CCTV cameras to track down the actor's attacker.

Days later on January 19, Sariful Islam, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested from near Hiranandani Estate in Kasarvadavali in Thane, about 35 kilometres from Mr Khan's house in Bandra. He was subsequently remanded in police custody.

Islam's father, however, said his son is being framed for reasons unknown to him.

White House Cancels Trumps Federal Funding Freeze Amid Chaos: Reports

Rafts of government aid programs and the health care system for millions of low-income Americans were up in the air after Trump ordered a halt to potentially trillions of dollars in grants, loans and other aid late Monday.

The move -- made in an order from White House's Office of Management and Budget -- sparked instant alarm and confusion, as well as a flurry of lawsuits before a judge issued a temporary injunction.

On Wednesday, the Office of Management and Budget issued a terse notification saying the freezing of aid order had been "rescinded."

However, soon after Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that the spending freezes remained in place -- and only the memo from the budget office was rescinded.

"This is NOT a rescission of the federal funding freeze" which remains in "full force," she said on X.

The White House has strongly defended the freeze as a blow against what Trump says is  waste and "woke" federal spending programs, and a tool to make sure that every government office supports the Republican's right-wing political goals.

Democrats accuse Trump of constitutional overreach by seeking to stop spending already approved by Congress, which has authority over the US budget.

Vocal Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett pounced on the new bout of confusion, posting: "Incompetence on full display... It's day 9 for a fool who had the job for 4 years and still has NO CLUE of how government, the law, nor the constitution works."

- White House on defense  -
Trump was due to sign the Laken Riley Act, a bill cracking down on migrant criminal suspects. It is his first piece of legislation since he returned to power vowing a blitz on illegal immigration.

But Trump's victory lap risks being overshadowed by the confusion on his high-profile spending freeze.

In her first press briefing on Tuesday, Leavitt had denied that the freeze had caused any "uncertainty" and defended it as part of Trump's bid to make the government "good stewards of taxpayer dollars."

Trump unveiled another radical move on Tuesday, offering most federal workers the option to leave their jobs in exchange for eight months severance, plunging the lives of US civil servants into disarray.

Leavitt had earlier Wednesday denied accusations of a purge of Trump's opponents over the severance plan.

"Absolutely false. This is a suggestion to federal workers that they have to return to work," she told reporters, referring to Trump's bid to make all federal employees return to full-time office work.

"If they don't then they have the option to resign and this administration is very generously offering to pay them for eight months."

- Focus on immigration -
The Laken Riley act -- which orders the pre-trial detention of undocumented migrants charged with theft and violent crimes -- is named for a 22-year-old student murdered by a Venezuelan man who was wanted for shoplifting.

Trump repeatedly spotlighted Riley's case during his election campaign as he railed against undocumented migrants, blaming them for "poisoning the blood" of the country.

Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, a Venezuelan with no papers, was convicted of murdering the nursing student in 2024 after she went missing on her morning run near the University of Georgia in Athens.

Ibarra had been arrested and released twice before, including when he crossed the Mexican border in 2022.

Trump has launched what his second administration is casting as a major crackdown on illegal migration, trumpeting immigration raids and arrests and deportations on military aircraft.

His administration said on Wednesday it had evoked an extension of the protected status for more than 600,000 Venezuelans that had allowed them to remain in the United States.

Trump has made the issue a priority on the international stage too, threatening Colombia with sanctions and massive tariffs for turning back two planes of deportees, before Bogota backed down.

Faith, Tradition And Law Amid Struggle For Final Resting Place In Chhattisgarh

On January 7, Ramesh Baghel's father died. No one could have imagined that the cremation of a pastor from a village in Bastar would reach the country's Supreme Court. His son wanted to bury him near the graves of his ancestors in the village, but he couldn't.

On Monday, the Supreme Court ordered that he must be buried in a cemetery in Jagdalpur, 30-35 km from the village. However, a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court was divided on the decision - one judge supported burying the body in the village, while the other said the last rites should be performed in the cemetery reserved for the community.

This ground report attempts to explore whether there exists a gap between court verdicts and social realities. Are social conditions often as simple as they appear based on facts alone?

A Village at the Crossroads of Faith and Law

In Bastar's Padarpara, a group of young people from the Christian community sing prayer songs. But the dusty roads of Chhindawara have settled over this song. In this quiet village, a farmer's fight has captured the attention of the entire nation - a village standing at the crossroads of faith, tradition, and justice. Politics and legal arguments kept heating up over the body of a pastor. His body lay inside a cold freezer for three weeks.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Ramesh's father, pastor Subhash Baghel, died on January 7. The family wanted him to be buried in the village cemetery near his ancestors. But this simple wish turned into a big controversy.

A Fight for Dignity, Not Just a Grave

For three weeks, Ramesh Baghel's father's body has been waiting burial. He was not allowed to be buried in his own village. This family believes this is not just a fight for a grave, but a fight for respect, against oppression and religious discrimination.

"Where I have buried my ancestors, my grandfather, my aunt, if suddenly someone refuses to allow it, then obviously the police and tehsildar who came supported them. Tomorrow, someone might tell me to leave my house... That's why I thought this was against my rights. My entire family is buried there, yet they are depriving us of this," said Ramesh.

A Community Divided by Faith

Ramesh's grandfather, Laksheshwar, and his father, Subhash, were among the first people in the village to convert to Christianity in the 1980s. Ramesh said earlier, everything was fine, but over the years, due to their religious beliefs, relationships in the village became strained to the point where they had to shut down their grocery store. If someone even bought a matchbox from them, villagers imposed a fine of Rs 5,100. The situation is such that even laborers refuse to work in their fields. The panchayat itself acknowledges this.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"We had a small shop, but it was shut down because of this. Now, no one wants to work as a laborer for us," said Ramesh.

The deputy sarpanch Rameshwar Nag, said their people say they have abandoned their tradition. "They say it is not right to maintain relations with them, so people have stopped visiting them," Mr Nag said.

Ramesh could not find a grave for his father in Chhindawara. The village has a population of 6,450, with over 6,000 belonging to tribal communities, while the rest are Dalits from the Mahara caste, which includes Ramesh's family.

However, Ramesh's case is not the first.

On the outskirts of the village, Padarpara exists. In October last year, Ishwar Nag from that village died in Tongpal, Sukma. His cousin, Jaldev Andhakuri, cremated him there, triggering controversy. The matter escalated so much that many of his relatives were detained by the police for five days, and Section 170 was imposed. This section is applied to someone who impersonates a public servant to commit wrongdoing.

Tribal communities such as Kalhar, Raut, Kumhar, Maria, Bhatra, Halba, and Dhurva, along with Dalits from the Mahara caste live in Chhindawara. Panchayat officials said this is not just a religious issue but also a matter of tribal identity and their reservation rights.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The Panchayat refers to the 5th Schedule and explains that, according to state laws, bodies can only be buried in designated locations. They also cite the PESA Act.

Many villagers believe that Christian customs threaten their traditional 'orthodox practices.' On February 7, 2024, the Gram Sabha passed a resolution stating that anyone who leaves this tradition and adopts another religion will not be given a place in the village cemetery.

Chhindwara has around 10 cemeteries, designated for different ethnic groups. In 2007, Ramesh's grandfather, Laxeshwar, and in 2015, his aunt were buried following Christian customs, and there was no objection at that time. However, now the Gram Sabha has passed a 13-point resolution.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Mangtu husband of sarpanch says "No one is instigating from outside. Those who have abandoned traditional customs, why should they claim ownership of our cremation grounds? Our traditional burial sites are allocated for the entire community, so why do they want to take over? We do not have any separate land for this. During their burial rituals, pastors come, the Bible is read... Our traditions are different, and that is why we do not want this. We follow traditional customs-if we ask to bury someone in a Muslim cemetery, will they allow it?"

Mangoes Ripen, Conflicts Deepen

Social divisions are deepening in the village even festivals and something as simple as sweet mangoes are becoming sources of conflict. Christians say they only have issues with idol worship but participate in all other celebrations. Those following traditional customs disagree.

Deputy Sarpanch Rameshwar Nag says "They do not observe our festivals, do not participate in Jatra (a local fair). When we organize fairs based on our traditions, we collect donations. We celebrate on specific dates, but they do not follow them. They celebrate Hindu festivals, but not our traditional ones. Until now, there was no dispute; they have always celebrated their way, and we never objected. But now, they are interfering in our festivals. For example, we do not eat mangoes until we complete our festival rituals, but they pluck and sell them before our festival arrives. By the time we celebrate, the mangoes are gone. These things make us very upset."

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

But Ramesh Baghel, Son of Late Subhash Baghel said "Everyone contributes donations; we just don't participate in idol worship."

However, not all members of the majority community support this discrimination. Some even openly spoke against it on camera, including the Panchayat members themselves.  Raju Ram a Panchayat Member said "A burial ground should be provided-where else will they go? Private spaces are not allowing them. Every religion is great. The problem is not religion; the issue is about land, water, and roads, which belong to everyone."

Bastar has nearly 70 per cent tribal population. The people here-Gond, Maria, Muria, Bhatra, Halba, and Dhurwa-deeply respect their traditional customs and religious beliefs. As we traveled, we stopped at a cemetery in Tirathgarh, where Muria tribe members were preparing for a funeral. Nearby was a white-colored grave belonging to the Sodhi tribe. Locals explained that since they were distant relatives, a spot was allocated for them beside the cemetery.

Ludru Ram Kashyap, a local Villager said "The village elders make the final decisions. So far, no one from outside has been buried here. All these graves belong to our relatives; we are one family."

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Deepchand Kashyap, another Villager said "We do not want to allocate cemetery space for Christians in Tirathgarh. It will be a problem."

Christians make up 8 per cent of Chhattisgarh's population. Around 4 lakh people in the state are directly associated with the church, out of which 2.5 lakh belong to the Catholic community. For the past two years, disputes over Christian burials have been increasing.

There have been more than 350 incidents related to burial conflicts in this period. In Chhattisgarh, particularly in Bastar, social inequality is evident. At a crossroads, society seems divided - some even say that in the coming days, this issue could become bigger than the Maoist problem.

Christian groups accuse the ruling party and Hindu organizations of inciting people against them, while the BJP denies these allegations.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Bhupendra Khora, Convener, Chhattisgarh Progressive Christian Alliance said "Villagers are being provoked and taught to suppress Christians in this manner. Earlier, everyone lived together. Christian burials had been happening for a long time. But when there was a change in power at the center, and later in the state, these problems started appearing. Nothing like this happened before."

But the local MP Mahesh Kashyap, said "This is not a matter of the BJP or any organization; this is about the culture, traditions, and identity of Bastar. There was a time when people were unaware. Even during 800 years of Mughal rule, there was no religious conversion here, nor during 200 years of British rule. I believe this is the only region in the world that has remained safe and protected in every sense. But today, in independent India, this region is facing a kind of encroachment. Naturally, people are angry, and that is why they are coming forward and using legal means to prevent it, with the entire society involved in this effort."

In Bastar, issues related to religious conversions and burial grounds have often led to tensions, violence, and even clashes. In December 2024, a dispute arose over the burial of a Christian woman in Bade Bodal village after her death. The situation turned violent, leaving eight people injured. In February 2024, a 25-year-old laborer, Tulsi Nag, could not be cremated in his own village in Navaguda due to similar conflicts. In 2023, a church in Narayanpur district was attacked. During that period, the issue of burials also led to unrest in several districts, including Bastar, Narayanpur, Kanker, Kondagaon, and Dantewada.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Bastar SP, Shalabh Sinha said "Many times, a peaceful resolution is reached, but there have been instances where it has been said that since there is a cemetery in the city, Christian community members should bury their dead there. Here, the PESA Act is in effect, and until a burial ground is officially designated, burials cannot take place. This becomes a contentious issue."

It is true that the Fifth Schedule is in effect in Bastar-which means the Panchayat (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act (PESA) applies here. Under this law, no factory can be set up, no place of worship can be built, and no religious gathering can take place without the consent of the Gram Sabha.

However, in the case of Ishwar Korram's burial in Chhindbahar, the Chhattisgarh High Court bench, led by Justice Rakesh Mohan Pandey, referred to a verse from the Yuddha Kanda of the Ramayana in the opening lines of its judgment.

"Mitraani dhan dhaanyaani prajaanaam sammatani va, Janani janmabhoomischa swargaadapi gareeyasi." meaning friends, wealth, and resources hold great value in this world, but nothing is greater than one's mother and motherland.

As a result, Ishwar Korram's family was granted their constitutional right under Article 21 to conduct his last rites with dignity.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

However, in the case of Subhash Baghel, the law stood in the way of his family's wishes. The ruling came from India's Supreme Court, but the bench was divided. One judge saw the burial restriction as a violation of Articles 14 and 15(1), which guarantee equality before the law and prohibit religious discrimination. The other judge, however, held that burial grounds cannot be arbitrarily designated. While the right to last rites is protected under the Constitution, no one has an absolute right to choose any burial site. Under Article 25, the freedom of religion is subject to public order, and the government has the authority to regulate such provisions.

Thus, Subhash Baghel was not buried in his own village but instead laid to rest in the Karakaapal cemetery. Ramesh Baghel finally buried his father here and the Supreme Court's verdict may bring closure to one family, but it also raises larger questions about coexistence in a country that thrives on diversity. Can we truly embrace unity if the differences that define us continue to divide us?

As the dust settles over the grave of Subhash Baghel, his family is left grappling with a sense of displacement. Their battle was not just for a burial ground but for dignity, identity, and the right to mourn their loved ones in the land they called home.

Kohli 'Troubled' By Ignored India Pacer During 'Intense' Ranji Practice: Report

Indian cricket team star batter Virat Kohli was troubled a couple of times by pacers Navdeep Saini and Siddhant Sharma during practice ahead of his return to domestic cricket, according to a report. Kohli, who will be playing his first Ranji match since 2012, practiced hard in the nets as he faced five bowlers - Money Grewal, Navdeep Saini, Rahul Gehlot, Siddhant Sharma, Vivek Gusain - in a 25-minute session, The report claimed that he looked confident but was beaten a few times by Saini and Sharma.

Earlier, Virat spent almost half an hour facing 3 spinners - Harsh Tyagi (left-arm), Sumit Mathur (left-arm), and Shivam (right-arm).

It was an 'intense' practice session for the star who did not have a good outing in Australia and although he did not face much issues, Virat was beaten twice by Tyagi's sharp spin.

At exactly 9am when his jet black Porsche zoomed in through the Feroz Shah Kotla ground's 'Virender Sehwag Gate', it was homecoming for Delhi's very own Virat Kohli, who checked in for a training stint with his first-class team after more than 12 years.

Save for pacer Navdeep Saini, all other 18 members of Delhi's squad had only seen him on TV and grown up listening to the tales of how 'Cheeku', the cherubic talent, became the 'King' of Indian cricket.

In the last 15 years, Delhi's 'Cheeku' became a hazy memory as he turned into the most commercially viable brand in global cricket, the face that ICC sold in its Olympic bid presentation.

On Monday, he was at his home ground for around three hours and had everyone in his vicinity hypnotised. Whether the young impressionable players, or seasoned head coach Sarandeep Singh or batting coach Bantu Singh -- all of them evidently wanted to be close to him.

Though courteous with all, the former India skipper seemed more comfortable with his former U-19 coach Mahesh Bhati, who is also the administrative manager of this team.

"Woh badlaa nahi hain. Usko chhole-poori pasand the aur humne mangaake rakhha thaa. Usne bola chole puri nahi khawoonga (He loves chhole poori, we made arrangements for him but he said he didn't want it)," a senior DDCA (Delhi and Districts Cricket Association) official told PTI.

What he did seek out after practice ahead of his first Ranji appearance in 12 years from January 30 was also an old favourite.

"Practice ke baad purane time ki tarah kadhi chawal khaya sabke saath (He had kadhi chawal with everyone)," revealed the official.

"How Can I Play For India?" Kohli Asked By Boy. Replies: "Tell Papa..."

Though courteous with all, the former India skipper seemed more comfortable with his former U-19 coach Mahesh Bhati, who is also the administrative manager of this team.

Everyone shadowed the icon like it was an event. Ranji Trophy matches are covered by a select bunch of domestic cricket faithfuls but on Monday, the numbers trebled.

Every move by the 'King' was followed. The two coaches -- Sarandeep and Bantu -- were by his side throughout and it would be difficult for photographers or videographers to edit them from the frame.

"I remember it was Ajit Chaudhary, the erstwhile manager of the Delhi Ranji team, who nicknamed him 'Cheeku' back in 2006-07," DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma, fondly called 'Mama', recollected as if it was yesterday.

He has seen Kohli since he first came here for U-15 trials.

The excitement is palpable and no wonder JioCinema, which was earlier not streaming the game, is making arrangements for the same. Power of Virat Kohli and business of TRP is a match made in heaven.

The Training

It was an occasion to remember for the Sanat Sangwans, Arpit Ranas and Siddhant Sharmas but for Kohli it was business as usual. It seemed he had left the star outside the ground and had turned up as their very own 'Virat Bhaiya'.

The 35 minute warm-up before an inconsequential final game against the Railways was the longest that the senior team has spent to loosen up prior to net session.

There was a 15-minute game of football and he had some sprints down the wide right, also enjoying a laugh or two.

But once the net session started, the game face was on.

He quietly walked to the nets where skipper Ayush Badoni was batting.

Seeing Kohli walk towards the nets, Badoni was visibly conscious before Kohli told him: 'Ayush tu batting karle, phir dono switch karke karenge (Ayush you keep batting. After sometime, we will take turns to bat)." Earlier, to make Badoni comfortable, he had also declined captaincy, just like Rishabh Pant did in the last game and Rohit Sharma did for Mumbai.

He spent close to an hour at the nets. At first, he took throw-downs where he kept playing the pull shot.

Once he had done enough knocking, Kohli entered the spinners' nets where he faced left-arm spinners Harsh Tyagi and Sumit Mathur. A few balls did grip and stop but there wasn't much bite in their bowling.

Ditto for pacers Navdeep Saini, Money Grewal, Rahul Gehlot and Siddhant Sharma.

Unlike India nets, Kohli hardly looked troubled although he did practice leaving a lot of deliveries. With the Champions Trophy round the corner, Kohli was seen trying to play a lot beside the line of deliveries.

Of late, he is concentrating on back-foot play and trying to increase his range of shots square of wicket. Obviously, before trying out in Champions Trophy, domestic cricket is good ground for a 'Pilot Episode'.

"He was very happy with the surfaces. He said, practice wicket, centre strip everything is of top quality. I told him credit to our young curator Ankit Datta. He said, 'Bhaiyya mazaa aa gaya batting karke. Kal phir aaoonga batting karne,' Bhati said.

Advice for little Kabir and his teammates

A fourth standard student Kabir had come with a sketch of 'Uncle Virat', who once played Delhi U-17 and U-19 cricket with his father Shavez back in the day.

"We had a bat contract with BDM and would go together to pick bats. We have been friends for long," Shavez said.

When Kabir was asked about his conversation with Kohli, he said: "I asked him how can I play for India? He said, 'You have to practice hard. And it shouldn't be your Papa telling you to go to practice. You should tell Papa, I have to go to practice'."

"You Were Supposed To Ensure Transition": Gambhir Gets '1-Year Warning'

The performances of several veteran Indian cricketers, including the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohamed Siraj, etc. have come under the spotlight over recent poor performances. While Rohit and Virat are even being pushed to quit Test cricket, no such verdict exists at present for head coach Gautam Gambhir. With the Champions Trophy being India's next big assignment, there are some who feel the team's poor show in the ICC event could lead to Gambhir's exit. However, former India opener Aakash Chopra feels the Test tour of England will define whether the head coach will stay or not.

Gambhir was brought in as India's head coach after Rahul Dravid's exit, following the team's ICC T20 World Cup triumph last year. As Gambhir nears completion of one year at the job, Chopra feels the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is bound to review his performances as well.

"I feel one more England tour. I don't think the BCCI will say anything to him until then. After the England tour, it will be a year since he took over the reins. You were supposed to ensure transition within one year. So how he did there, which players he prepared, and whether the team's performances have improved, a review can be done for him," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

If India don't succeed in the upcoming Champions Trophy and then the England tour, Chopra feels BCCI could seriously ponder moving on from the head coach.

"However, at least one year at the job is absolutely important to review someone's performance. You need 12 months. So I feel not the Champions Trophy, but the England tour. That might just be a critical barometer or parameter based on which Gautam Gambhir's performance might be reviewed. It won't be a bad thing. You review the performances of batters and bowlers, so do it for the coach as well," Chopra asserted.

"Can't Wait To...": Sara Tendulkar Begins New Journey With...

Marking half a decade of serving the less-privileged and the needy in ways that enable them to believe and take the lead, the Sachin Tendulkar Foundation (STF) held a close-knit celebration in Mumbai at The Bombay Club. Tributes and acknowledgements from friends, family, well-wishers, and non-profit partners, paved the event as STF reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring better living with primary focus areas of health, education, and sports for children.

The theme of the evening, "Shine Brighter Together" shed light on the Foundation's core idea of impacting lives, especially children through sports, health and education.

For Sara Tendulkar, daughter of former India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who recently donned the mantle of Director at the Foundation, the evening was her first official engagement. Stepping on the path shown by her parents at such a young age, Sara brings in a fresh perspective of connecting with the youth and helping them take flight with their aspirations.

Reflecting on her family's commitment to bettering lives and the transformative potential of the Foundation's initiatives, Sara said, "Growing up, I was always inspired by my family, who shaped my understanding of the power of giving. I had the opportunity to witness the Foundation's work and see the spark of hope that lights up in the lives of not just the children but entire families. Over the last five years, the Sachin Tendulkar Foundation has touched over 100,000 young lives, and that's a hundred thousand reasons to keep going. I am grateful to everyone who believed in us and stood by our side to make this journey possible," as quoted by the press release from STF.

A short film introduced the guests to the Foundation's work. The audience was enlightened on the continued dedication of the Tendulkars and STF towards a shared dream of empowering the young dreamers, through strategic partnerships. The work done by the 15+ NGO partners who STF collaborates with was acknowledged and applauded.

Coldplay's Chris Martin was in attendance and engaged in a Tete-a-tete, on stage with Sachin Tendulkar.

China's AI Startup DeepSeek Hit By "Cyberattack", Limits New Registration

Chinese AI sensation DeepSeek on Monday said it was limiting the registration of new users due to large-scale cyberattacks on its services.

The company, whose chatbot took over OpenAI's ChatGPT as Apple's top downloaded app on Monday, cited "large-scale malicious attacks" for outages and its inability to take on new users.

DeepSeek, which was developed by a start-up based in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, has shown the ability to match the capacity of AI pace-setters such as Nvidia.

Its success on the US app store sent shares in AI-linked tech giants plummeting on Monday.

The low-cost Chinese generative AI venture is thought to have matched US companies in its abilities but at a fraction of the cost.

Analysts had long thought that the United States' critical advantage over China when it comes to producing high-powered chips -- and its ability to prevent the Asian power from accessing the technology -- would give it the edge in the AI race.

Available as an app or on desktop, DeepSeek can do many of the things that its Western competitors can do -- write song lyrics, help work on a personal development plan, or even write a recipe for dinner based on what's in the fridge.

It is however subject to the censorship seen in other Chinese-made chatbots like Baidu's Ernie Bot that are very limited on how they interact on political topics.

India Star Gets Blockbuster Dhoni Praise From Manjrekar: "Being The Man..."

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has showered big praise on youngster Tilak Varma, comaring his match-winning abilities to that of legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni. Manjrekar's remarks came after Tilak single-handedly took India to a win over England in the second T20I on Saturday, despite wickets falling at the other end. Manjrekar highlighted how Tilak managed to keep his composure till the end, something which Dhoni used to during his playing days. Needing 166 to win, Tilak's 55-ball 72 steered India home with four balls to spare.

"Absolutely. The confidence he has that he will be able to see India through the very end and even in this run chase, there was no panic around the 18th over. Even in the 19th over, you could see that India wasn't getting the boundary that could take the pressure off. But he was quite happy to virtually be there till the end. It seems the guy who is confident and being the man who can take his team through, just like we had a legend in the past in the name of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had the same confidence. So, when you have a player like him, batting at No.3, he might be taking on that role, which is not such a bad thing," Manjrekar said on ESPNcricinfo.

Since his debut in August 2023, Tilak has been one of the best young performers for India in the format, especially in the last few months. His elevation to number three on the tour of South Africa was an instant success through his back-to-back centuries.

After the match, Tilak reflected on the pressure-filled final overs of the chase, saying he always had it in his mind to play till the end.

"Gautam sir told me in the last innings that when you need 10 runs in an over, you can do that too. When you need 7-8 runs, your role is very crucial. So, you need to stay till the end. No matter how you play, let the non-striker score. Your job is to get one or two boundaries in an over and take singles."

"If you stay till the end, we win the game. He told me this in the last match as well. And even today, during the drinks break, he told me, no matter what happens, you need to play till the end. So, I had it in my mind that I would play till the end. And I believed that I would win the match," Tilak told the broadcaster's after the match.

"Had To Pay Off Loan, Sold Poori Sabzi": Tendulkar, Kohli's Ex-Teammate

A sportsperson's life more often than not is full of struggles. More so in India, where competition can be intense. But then, Indian sport is abound with stories where despite humble background, players rose to became stars with sheer discipline and hard work. Former India player Manoj Tiwary is one such name. He played 12 ODIs and three T20Is for India. But had he been a little more fortunate, he would have featured in more international matches.

Tiwary played with the likes Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir  during his time with the Indian cricket team. He scored 796 runs at an average 99.50 in the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy season. He led Bengal for a long time and was one of the best cricketers to emerge from the state.

Tiwary, however, had to face a lot of struggle both on and off the field. He even thought of taking early retirement after he did not get enough opportunities for an extended period in the Indian team.

"Due to responsibility, I did not take early retirement," he said.

He was also asked on his struggle in the teenage years when he had to work hard to pay off loans. "Those were difficult times. One thing I always had in mind was that I had to pay off the loan. We have Mangla Haat In Kolkata, there I used to sell poori sabzi. My mom used to make the pooris. Sometimes people did not even pay for the food that they ate," Manoj Tiwary said on Lallantop

"I worked in factories of nut and bolts. This was around when I was around 14 years old. I got Rs 1200 per match when I played in U-16 level. So I did the maths and made sure I did well in cricket so that the  money always comes. I ran away from the factory. It was too hectic. The factory owner used to make us work."

When his debut came in 2008 it was not special. He slammed his maiden ODI century against West Indies in Chennai in 2011, but was benched for months after that game. MS Dhoni was the skipper of the side duting that time.

"He was the captain. Team India runs according to the planning of the skipper. In state teams, things are different but in Team India its all about the captain. If you see, during Kapil Dev's time it was he who ran the show, during Sunil Gavaskar's tenure it was his call, same was during Mohammad Azharuddin's tenure. After that Dada and so on. This will go on unless a strict administrator comes and makes a set rule," Manoj Tiwary said.

"You see Ajit Agarkar (current BCCI chief selector) and you feel he can take strong decisions. He can disagree with the coach. As far as me being dropped for 14 matches after scoring a century, if a player is dropped after scoring a century, obviously I want to know the answer. After century I was praised, but post that I did not have any inkling. At that time, youngsters used to feel afraid, including me. If you ask something, who knows what way it could have been taken. Career is on the line.

"The players who were in the team then were Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma. After that the Tour which took place, they were not making runs. And here I was, even after making a century and winning Player of the Match, could not find a place in playing XI. I was dropped for 14 matches, which took place in a space of six months. At that time the dropped player did not get enough practice. I wanted to retire but due to family responsibility could not."

India Will Be Strong If Sanatan Dharma Is Strong: Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday urged people to take forward the message of unity, saying the country will be strong if Sanatan dharma is strong.

He also accused the opposition parties of seeking to divide the country on caste-religious lines for their own political interests and said doing so is nothing less than treason.

He voiced strong disapproval of demands from some quarters to divide the state into four, saying the potential of Uttar Pradesh lies in its unity.

"The message of the Maha Kumbh is the message of unity and integrity, and this should go out to the world. If all the saints, devotees or even tourists, who are part of the Maha Kumbh, take forward the message of unity, then Sanatan dharma will be strengthened and, if Sanatan dharma is strong, then our country will be strong," Adityanath said in an interview to "News18 Network" at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela.

Video: Tamil Nadu Kabaddi Players Attacked At Punjab Event, Minister Reacts

Kabaddi players from Tamil Nadu, participating in an Inter-University competition in Bathinda, Punjab, were assaulted on Friday, according to reports. The fight broke out after the players were unhappy with a decision of the match referee, the reports claimed. The student-athletes from various universities such as Mother Teresa University, Periyar University, Alagappa University and Bharathiar University were competing in the North Zone Inter University & All India Inter University Kabaddi (Women) Championship 2024-25

According to a report in India Today, the athletes were allegedly first attacked by players of a rival team. The report added that a 'foul attack' called against Mother Teresa University during the game with Darbhanga University resulted in an altercation. The referee of the kabaddi match attacked a member of the Mother Teresa team after argument broke out following an appeal.

In a video which has gone viral on social media, players can be seen clashing with few men. It is not clear from the video, whether they were officials or spectators. Chairs were also hurled by both parties.

Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said that the girls were safe and will return to the state soon.

"There was a small incident today morning. I have spoken to the Physical Education Director, Mr Kalaiarasi. Now everything is under control. No major injuries or anything. First aid was given to the students. They will return to Delhi and they will be made to stay at Delhi House (Tamil Nadu House in Delhi) tonight. They are leaving from Delhi in the night the day after tomorrow. They will be reaching Chennai very shortly," he said.

'Man On CCTV Doesn't Look Like My Son': Father Of Saif Ali Khan's Attacker

Md Ruhul Amin Fakir, father of Mohammed Shariful Islam, the man accused in the recent attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, spoke exclusively with IANS on Thursday. He defended his son and called into question the allegations. Mr Fakir insisted his son had been wrongfully implicated in the incident.

According to Mr Fakir, the images from CCTV footage showing a suspect with long hair do not match his son's usual appearance. "From what is shown in the CCTV... my son never keeps his hair long. I believe my son is being framed," Mr Fakir asserted, denying any connection between his son's typical appearance and the person seen in the footage.

Shariful, who is from Bangladesh, had moved to India due to the political unrest in his home country.

To a question from IANS, Mr Fakir explained: "He left Bangladesh and came to India for one reason — the political unrest in Bangladesh... He was working where he received a salary, and his employer even rewarded him..."

Mr Fakir went on to describe his son's life in India, painting a picture of a man simply trying to make a living in a foreign country.

"The salary in Mumbai's hotels is higher than in West Bengal. The hotels there are quite large, and the salary is also higher," Mr Fakir noted, suggesting that Shariful moved to Mumbai for better job prospects in the hospitality industry.

Despite the gravity of the accusations against his son, Fakir insists that he hasn't received any communication from the police.

Asked if the local police had contacted him, he said: "No, nothing like that has happened. No one has come from anywhere. We don't know anyone in India. We have no support in India."

Mr Fakir reflected on his last conversation with Shariful, recalling their regular exchanges.

"My last conversation with my son was on a Friday evening," he said. "He (Shariful) used to get his salary after the 10th of every month... After that, he would talk to me."

Why Trump's Claims About Americans Splitting The Atom Angers New Zealanders

Imagine a newly-elected president of a country claiming the legacy of someone as foundational as Thomas Edison. That's the kind of appropriation New Zealanders are witnessing.

The recent inaugural address of President Donald Trump has sparked a heated debate over the origins of a groundbreaking scientific achievement: splitting the atom. Trump's claim that American experts were responsible for this feat has been met with swift correction from New Zealanders, who proudly assert that their native son, Sir Ernest Rutherford, was the true pioneer behind this discovery.

Rutherford's achievement in 1917 at Victoria University of Manchester in England marked a pivotal moment in the history of nuclear physics. His work not only earned him a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908 but also led to the discovery of radioactive half-life and the understanding that radioactivity involves the transmutation of one chemical element to another.

Nick Smith, the mayor of Nelson, near Rutherford's hometown, has invited the US ambassador to visit the Lord Rutherford memorial, emphasising the importance of preserving the accurate historical record. Smith expressed his surprise at Trump's claim, stating, "I was a bit surprised by new president Donald Trump in his inauguration speech about US greatness claiming today Americans split the atom when that honour belongs to Nelson's most famous and favourite son Sir Ernest Rutherford."

Trump's remarks have also drawn criticism from other New Zealanders, including Ben Uffindell, editor of The Civilian, who wrote on social media, "Okay, I've gotta call time. Trump just claimed America split the atom. That's THE ONE THING WE DID."

Rutherford's legacy extends far beyond his scientific contributions. He remains one of New Zealand's most beloved sons, and his face still appears on the country's $100 bill. As the world continues to grapple with the complexities of scientific discovery and national pride, Rutherford's story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving accurate historical records and honouring the achievements of pioneering scientists.

In the realm of nuclear physics, Rutherford's work paved the way for numerous breakthroughs, including the discovery of the neutron and the development of nuclear reactors. His influence can be seen in the work of other scientists, such as John Cockcroft and Ernest Walton, who successfully split lithium atoms using artificially accelerated protons in 1932.

Government May Gain Control Over Pataudi Family's Rs 15,000 Crore Property

The historical properties of the Pataudi family estimated to be worth Rs 15,000 crore and linked to the family of Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, are one step closer to being taken under government control.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court, in a significant ruling, lifted the stay imposed on these properties in 2015, potentially paving the way for their acquisition under the Enemy Property Act, 1968.

Prominent properties under scrutiny include the Flag Staff House, where Saif Ali Khan spent his childhood, along with Noor-Us-Sabah Palace, Dar-Us-Salam, Bungalow of Habibi, Ahmedabad Palace, Kohefiza Property, and others.

Justice Vivek Agarwal, while delivering the order, said a statutory remedy exists under the amended Enemy Property Act, 2017, and directed the parties concerned to file a representation within 30 days.

"If a representation is filed within 30 days from today, the appellate authority shall not advert to the aspect of limitation and shall deal with the appeal on its own merits," the court said.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The Enemy Property Act allows the central government to claim properties owned by individuals who migrated to Pakistan post-Partition.

Bhopal's last Nawab, Hamidullah Khan, had three daughters. His eldest, Abida Sultan, migrated to Pakistan in 1950. The second daughter, Sajida Sultan, stayed in India, married Nawab Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, and became the legal heir.

Sajida's grandson, Saif Ali Khan, inherited a share of the properties. However, Abida Sultan's migration became the focal point for the government's claim to the properties as "enemy property."

In 2019, the court recognized Sajida Sultan as the legal heir, but the recent ruling rekindled the family's property dispute.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Bhopal collector Kaushalendra Vikram Singh announced plans to examine the ownership records of these properties over the last 72 years. He said individuals staying on these lands may be treated as tenants under the state's leasing laws.

The potential government takeover has left 1.5 lakh residents in a state of anxiety. Many fear eviction as the government pushes forward with plans to conduct surveys and determine ownership.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"The stay has been lifted, but merging these properties under the Enemy Property Act is complicated. The Pataudi family still has a chance to appeal," Sumer Khan, a resident, said.

Chand Mian, another resident, expressed concern. "We pay taxes, but there's no registry for our homes. The Nawab's leases should still stand."

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Naseem Khan, who lives in the area, also said, "The government is claiming these properties, but many have been sold or leased over the years. This issue is far from straightforward."

The situation is complex, and with legal avenues still open for the family, the fate of these historical properties hangs in the balance.

Centre To Hold Meeting With Protesting Farmers On February 14

The Centre will hold a meeting with Punjab's protesting farmers on February 14 in Chandigarh to discuss their demands, a senior official of the Union government said on Saturday evening.

The breakthrough came after a delegation of officials from the Union Agriculture Ministry, led by joint secretary Priya Ranjan, met fasting farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal and held a meeting with the representatives of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.

The central government delegation also urged Dallewal, whose fast-unto-death entered 54th day on Saturday, to take medical aid so that he can participate in the proposed meeting.

Speaking to reporters at the Khanauri protest site, Ranjan said a high-level delegation was sent by the Centre keeping in mind the deteriorating health of Dallewal.

"We enquired about his health and held a meeting with the representatives (of protesting farmer bodies)," said Ranjan.

He said that the meeting will be held in Chandigarh on February 14.

"We urge him (Dallewal) to break his fast, take medical aid so that he can participate in the meeting," he said.

Four rounds of meetings had taken place between the Central ministers and protesting farmers on February 8, 12, 15 and 18 last year, but talks had remained inconclusive.

Earlier in the day, farmers protesting at the Khanauri and Shambhu border points between Punjab and Haryana said they have received a proposal from the central government which they will discuss.

Farmers, under the banner of the SKM (Non-Political) and KMM, have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13 last year. The farmers pitched their tents there after security forces refused to allow them to march to Delhi to press for their various demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

Farmer leader Dallewal, the convener of the SKM (Non-Political), has been on an indefinite hunger strike at the Khanauri border point since November 26 last year.

Farmers earlier said Dallewal's condition is "critical". Dallewal has lost about 20kg and has refused any medical aid during his fasting, they said.

On Saturday, 10 more farmers began a fast-unto-death at the Khanauri border point. The number of fasting farmers has now increased to 121.

Navi Mumbai Resident Conned Of 15 Crores, Man With 'Cambodia Links' Arrested

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man from Khagaria town in Bihar for cheating a Navi Mumbai resident to the tune of more than Rs 14.88 crore in a share trading cyber fraud, an official said on Friday.

The Navi Mumbai police's Cyber Cell tracked down and nabbed the accused, identified as Sujitkumar Madankumar Singh, who has connections in Cambodia where he worked at call centres and duped Indian citizens in scams, he said.

Senior inspector Gajanan Kadam of the Cyber Police station said an FIR was registered under relevant provisions of the new criminal code BNS and the IT Act on a complaint of the victim.

According to the complainant, between January and August 2024, he was cheated of Rs 14,88,91,665 in an online share trading scam.

Fraudsters lured the Navi Mumbai resident after assuring him of lucrative returns in investment in share trading, the police said.

Police worked on several leads, including technical and intelligence inputs, and zeroed in on the accused who was from Bihar. A police team rushed to the northern state and arrested him from Khagaria town, Kadam said.

During interrogation in police custody, it was revealed that between June 2023 and January 2024 and again February 2024 to June 2024, Singh was in Cambodia, where he worked in call centres and cheated Indians in cyber frauds, he informed.

He used to purchase SIM cards in India and supply them to his associates in Cambodia. Singh was a member in several Telegram groups and was connected to people from the Southeast Asian nation, said the inspector.

Primary probe revealed he was in contact with other associates in India as well, the official said.

'Mulholland Drive' And 'Twin Peaks' Director David Lynch Dies At 78

David Lynch -- the singular and surreal director of "Mulholland Drive" and television's "Twin Peaks," who depicted the darkness lurking beneath the wholesome surface of American life -- has died. He was 78 years old.

An enigmatic artist who turned his hand to arthouse and blockbuster film, television, painting and music, Lynch was considered first and foremost one of US cinema's great auteurs.

"It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch," read a statement on his official Facebook page.

"There's a big hole in the world now that he's no longer with us. But, as he would say, 'Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.'"

The cause and location of death were not specified. Lynch, who lived in Los Angeles, had suffered from emphysema after years of heavy smoking.

He emerged on the US indie scene with his groundbreaking 1977 horror "Eraserhead," a creepy and now cult classic shot on a shoestring budget over five years because he kept running out of money.

Lynch acquired a devoted following with critically adored films including sadomasochist mystery "Blue Velvet" (1986) and surreal thriller "Mulholland Drive" (2001).

But he may be best remembered for his mesmerizing 1990s series "Twin Peaks," which paved the way for many a prestige television drama to follow.

With four Oscar nominations, including a trio of best director nods, the filmmaker recognizable by his shock of white hair took home just one honorary statuette, in 2019.

- 'Fearless' -

Tributes from across Hollywood were swiftly posted to social media.

"#RIPDavidLynch, a gracious man and fearless artist who followed his heart & soul and proved that radical experimentation could yield unforgettable cinema," wrote director Ron Howard.

"David Lynch, RIP. At least that's what the horse wearing a fez just told me* in a dream. (*Backwards and in Swedish)," said comedian and actor Patton Oswalt, in a nod to Lynch's highly surreal style.

Born in small-town Montana in 1946, the son of a US Department of Agriculture research scientist, Lynch travelled extensively around Middle America as a young man.

He attended fine arts colleges in both Boston and Philadelphia, where he studied painting.

A one-minute animated film caught the eye of the American Film Institute, where he began work on what would later become "Eraserhead."

That was followed by 1980's "The Elephant Man," also shot in black-and-white and deeply tragic, but decidedly more mainstream and accessible. Lynch earned his first best director Oscar nomination.

Based on the diary of Joseph Merrick, the so-called "Elephant Man" born in the United States in 1862 with a condition that gave him a severely deformed physical appearance, it starred Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt.

An attempt to adapt sci-fi novel "Dune" into a blockbuster in 1984 would be one of Lynch's less well-received efforts, though it still has its admirers.

Lynch pivoted back to his arthouse roots with "Blue Velvet," about a young man who comes home from college and finds a severed ear. His investigation uncovers the sinister side of small-town America.

It starred Isabella Rossellini and Dennis Hopper, along with his regular collaborators Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern, and is often heralded as his greatest work. It also earned Lynch's second Academy Award nomination for directing.

After winning the top prize Palme d'Or at Cannes with "Wild at Heart" in 1990, Lynch turned his attention to television with "Twin Peaks," which captivated and shocked American in equal measure from its 1990 launch.

The tale of a tight-knit northwestern town reacting to the rape and murder of a popular but troubled high school girl, it was years ahead of its time and far more sophisticated than most network programming even today.

But ratings plummeted as the show's second season lost its direction after the purported meddling of ABC executives, and was cancelled. An even darker 1992 prequel film was initially panned by critics, but is now considered a classic.

- 'Singular and irreplaceable' -

After returning to film with "Lost Highway" and "The Straight Story," Lynch in 2001 made his second undisputed masterpiece, "Mulholland Drive, which brought Lynch his third best director Oscar nomination.

In a baffling world of hallucinations and cryptic happenings, Naomi Watts plays a naive actress who meets a mysterious brunette suffering amnesia, before everything gets inverted in an astonishing twist that still has fans arguing over its meaning to this day.

Film writer David Thomson called it "one of the greatest films ever made about the cultural devastation caused by Hollywood."

Lynch's final full-length feature film was 2006's inscrutable "Inland Empire," although he returned to the world of "Twin Peaks" with an acclaimed sequel series for cable network Showtime in 2017.

But he never retired, continuing to produce short films, music and paintings from his studio and home -- appropriately located just outside Hollywood, on Mulholland Drive.

He regularly posted whimsical weather updates to his YouTube channel, underlining the optimistic and playful man behind his often troubling art.

"It's a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way," said his family's tribute Thursday.

"I join you in the depths of this grief, in love and in reverence and celebration of someone who is singular and irreplaceable," wrote his "Twin Peaks" collaborator, singer Chrystabell.
