Who Is Shashank Singh? PBKS Star Who Took Team To Win vs GT

The Gujarat Titans vs Punjab Kings IPL 2024 match was a thriller to the core. After Shubman Gill's 89* took Gujarat Titans to 199/4 in 20 overs, most the Punjab Kings top batters fell on low scores. But one man had some other idea - Shashank Singh. The domestic cricket star slammed 61* in 29 balls (4x6s, 6x4s) to take his team to a memorable win in the last over vs GT. In a team filled with stars like Shikhar Dhawan and Sam Curran, it was Shashank Singh who did the job for PBKS. 

However, Shashank Singh' auction selection lead to a lot of controversy. At the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, Punjab Kings co-owners Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia looked confused after they won the bid for uncapped Indian Shashank Singh. It appeared that the IPL franchise did not intend to buy the player, but then the gavel had already fallen. IPL 2024 auctioneer Mallika Sagar also looked a little surprised as the PBKS management was seen going through the players auction list. However, PBKS decided to go ahead with the buy and even welcomed Shashank Singh to their team through a post on X.

Punjab Kings clarified that buying Shashank Singh was always in  their plans.

"Punjab Kings would like to clarify that Shashank Singh was always on our target list. The confusion was due to 2 players of the same name being on the list. We are delighted to have him onboard and see him contribute to our success," Punjab Kings wrote in a post on X.

Shashank Singh was brought up in the accelerated phase of the auction, with PBKS and other franchises looking to buy some uncapped Indian players in the category of INR 20 lakh base price.

When Shashank's name was brought up, Preity Zinta raised the paddle after discussing the player with her team. The player was quickly sold as no other franchise bid for him, and the hammer went down.

Shashank Singh has played 58 domestic T20, scoring 754 at a strike-rate of 137.34. The 32-year-old batting all-rounder plays for Chhattisgarh at the national level. He is journeyman of sorts in IPL. Earlier, he has been associated with three other IPL franchises - SunRisers Hyderabad, Delhi Daredevils (erstwhile) and Rajasthan Royals. 
 

IIT Bombay Clarifies Placement Status Amid 36% Unplaced Students Report

In response to reports showing that 36% of graduates at IIT Bombay are yet to secure jobs this placement season, the institute has released data from an exit survey conducted among graduating students in the academic year 2022-23.

According to the survey result shared by the institute, only 6.1% of graduates are looking for jobs, while the majority of students, accounting for 57.1%, secured jobs through IIT Bombay's placement process. Additionally, 12.2% of students opted to pursue higher degrees, while 8.3% chose careers in public service.

Furthermore, a breakdown of employment preferences among students reveals that 10.9% secured jobs outside of IIT Bombay, with 1.6% venturing into startup ventures. A small percentage, 4.3%, remain undecided about their career paths.

The institute has released these statistics to address concerns and clarify job prospects for its students amidst the ongoing economic challenges.

According to a report in the Hindustan Times, approximately 712 out of the 2,000 registered students are still without job offers this session. "It was a struggle to invite companies to the campus compared to last year due to the global economic meltdown," said an officer from IIT Bombay's placement cell, as quoted by HT.

"The majority of companies faced challenges in accepting the salary packages predetermined by the institute, requiring several rounds of negotiation before they agreed to participate," the officer added.

The officer noted that, for the first time, students registered in the Computer Science and Engineering branch, typically highly sought-after, did not achieve full placement among those enrolled. The placement process at IIT Bombay is currently in progress and will continue until May 2024.

This year witnessed a rise in the percentage of students without placements, with 35.8% remaining unplaced, marking a 2.8 percentage point increase compared to the previous session. In 2023, the HT report states that out of the 2,209 students registered at IIT Bombay, 1,485 had secured jobs, leaving 32.8% unplaced.

A significant number of the 380 companies that participated in the placement drive were domestic, contrary to the usual trend of more international firms, it adds.

In January, reports surfaced that 85 students at IIT Bombay received job offers with annual packages worth Rs 1 crore. Later, the institute had issued a clarification stating that only 22 students had received packages worth Rs 1 crore.

"The phase-I placements (December 1-20, 2023) incorrectly reported the number of accepted ₹1 crore plus offers as 85. The correct number of accepted one crore plus offers is 22. All other data reported is confirmed to be correct. The Placement Office of IIT Bombay strongly regrets this mistake," the official statement read.

Unfazed by the accident, they tried to steal a bike. Failed. They then overpowered a biker and took his motorbike away.

Police have filed a case under section 394 of IPC which deals with armed robbery, and are looking for the accused.

Congress Expels Sanjay Nirupam For 6 Years Over "Anti-Party Statements"

Bengaluru Man Seeks "Refuge" In OYO Room To Beat The Heat, Company Reacts

In recent weeks, India's startup capital Bengaluru has been grappling with several challenges, including scorching heat and water shortage. Amidst this, an individual took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the rising temperature in the city which is famous for its pleasant climate. The X user named Rishabh Srivastava humorously compared the situation in the IT hub to a shift from "chill" to "grill". He expressed that the heat in the city was so bad that he had to check into an OYO hotel. And as expected, Mr Srivastava's tweet caught the attention of the multinational hospitality chain, which took a jib at the city's weather. 

"Looks like Bangalore weather decided to level up from chill to grill," wrote Rishabh Srivastava on X. He added that since he "can't survive without AC," he "checked into an OYO as a refugee". 

Reacting to Mr Srivastava's post, OYO Rooms joined in the conversation. Reposting the X user's tweet, OYO Rooms wrote, "Bangalore, you had one job. But now, we're doing it".

OYO's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ritesh Agarwal also supported the company's official account's stance and reshared the post.

Meanwhile, amid Bengaluru's rising temperature, earlier a video of a man handing out water bottles to traffic police officers had gone viral on social media. The video was shared by Shree Ram Bishnoi, a Bangalore City Police traffic warden, who said that the man does this regularly to help the constables in Hebbal amid the soaring heat.

Notably, Bengaluru experienced its highest maximum temperature for March in the past five years, reaching 36.4 degrees Celsius on Friday. On Sunday, the temperature crossed 40 degrees Celsius in Karnataka's Kalaburagi. People have already started experiencing heat wave conditions. 

Amid this, Bengaluru is also grappling with a severe water crisis, with residents, schools, offices, and apartment complexes facing acute shortages. The IT city faces a water crisis exacerbated by depleting groundwater levels and drought in the Cauvery basin. Bengaluru needs 2,600-2,800 million litres of water daily, and the current supply is half of what's required.

Police arrested Brian Cohee in 2021 after discovering the remains of 69-year-old Warren Barnes. The incident, which involved a then 19-year-old Cohee, sparked a local investigation and is documented in the true-crime documentary "Parents Discover Teen Son's Horrifying Secret" on the YouTube channel EXPLORE WITH US.

The heinous crime involved Cohee decapitating, dismembering, and mutilating Mr Barnes's body, then bringing some of the body parts home, where they were discovered by his mother. His mother on a 911 call told police that the teen had a "fascination with the morbid".

In addition to the head, Mr Barnes's hands were also found by Cohee's mother, Terri, decomposing in a separate plastic bag hidden in his wardrobe. 

Cohee attempted to dispose of the remaining body parts by placing them in the trunk of his car and trying to drive the vehicle into the Colorado River.

Brian Cohee II was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2023 after he murdered 69-year-old Warren Barnes in 2021. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The documentary showcased police dashcam footage capturing the moment authorities arrived at the Cohee residence.

During the police questioning at his home, Cohee was asked, "Your parents have raised concerns about some items they may have found in your room. Can you elaborate?" Cohee responded calmly, saying, "Yes, I believe so. A human head and hands, from that man who went missing. I killed him with a knife."

When pressed further by the officers about his motives, Cohee added, "I always wondered what it would feel like to commit murder."

Later, during a painful recollection in a police interview, Terri remembered the moment she discovered Barnes's severed head in her son's closet. She recounted, "I was tidying up his room, putting things away, and came across a plastic container in his closet. As I started digging through it, I found a plastic bag. Curious, I picked it up, feeling its weight, and noticed it was infested with maggots. I took it to the sink, noticing it was double-bagged. I opened the first bag but couldn't bring myself to open the second. I immediately called his father and said, 'You need to come over right now.'"

Cohee's parents subsequently dialled 911 to report the horrifying find, even acknowledging to the dispatcher that their son had displayed a disturbing fascination with 'death and mortality'.

Cohee confessed to using a kitchen knife to end Barnes's life and revealed that he had been contemplating taking someone's life for six months beforehand.

He further disclosed his intent to target a homeless individual or a prostitute, believing that their absence would likely go unnoticed.

In another part of the documentary, Cohee recounted the grisly details of his crime to investigators, displaying no signs of emotion or remorse.

He said, "It was the night of February 27th it was a full moon and I figured I could see so well why not try it out, I am in a bad state of mind at that time, I have a major depressive disorder.

"I was driving around and I saw a shape and I am like ''oh interesting''. I'm like that's a homeless person, so I grabbed my knife, I put on three layers of gloves because plastic gloves can betray their users because they're so thin, I took the knife I pulled back the canvas and stabbed his neck.

"At first, he was in a state of panic, asking, 'What are you doing? Why?' But I just continued stabbing his neck," he recounted to investigators.

He described himself as "growling" and making "animalistic noises" as he inflicted the wounds on Barnes.

He then chuckled as he provided nauseating details of how he dismembered the man's body, followed by an apologetic remark, "Sorry, that's morbid," directed at the investigators.

Cohee appeared eager to divulge the grisly specifics of his crime to the investigators, displaying excitement as he recounted the murder and seemed to relish the memory.

Despite pleading insanity, Cohee was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole last year, having been found guilty of first-degree murder.

Additionally, he was convicted on two counts of tampering with a dead body and tampering with evidence.

Judge Richard Gurley, who presided over the case, described it as one of the most horrific he had encountered in his 37-year tenure within the criminal justice system.
