The Buckingham Palace has reportedly been placed under lockdown after a man was arrested on Tuesday evening for throwing suspected shotgun cartridges into the palace grounds.

The cartridges have been recovered and will be taken for specialist examination, according to a police statement.

Police said the man was also found to be in possession of a suspicious bag, which was destroyed by them in a controlled explosion.

"Specialists attended and following an assessment a controlled explosion was conducted as a precaution," the statement said.

There have been no reports of any shots fired, or any injuries to anyone.

The King and the Queen Consort were not at the palace at the time of the incident.
